Habitat for Humanity is an international organization focused on ending poverty housing and homelessness worldwide. Volunteers work in nearly 100 countries, raising money and building homes for families who lack adequate shelter. Since the founding of Habitat in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, volunteers have built 225,000 houses and provided shelter to more than 1 million people.
Homeowner families work alongside volunteers on their own homes, and upon completion they receive their homes at zero profit and through zero interest mortgages. The money from their mortgages is in turn used to fund the construction of even more Habitat houses. People who volunteer with Habitat are a part of something huge — another Habitat house is completed every 21 minutes!
Our Chapter’s Goals
- Building houses – In partnership with Sandtown Habitat for Humanity, we work to renovate abandoned rowhouses in the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood of Baltimore. Our chapter works on its own house, and the entire construction process takes about a year and a half. We are very active; we work every Saturday, and are currently on our 8th house. More Info.
- Raising funds – Our chapter contributes $25k to the construction of each house, so raising money is a very important part of our mission. We fundraise through various methods: working security at Ravens games, holding special events like our Run for Shelter 5K, receiving charitable donations, etc. More Info.
- Raising awareness – We have a responsibility to educate others about poverty housing problems and the work of Habitat for Humanity . We incorporate education/advocacy into our regular activities, and we also hold events like HabiJam, our annual spring benefit concert.
