In order to sponsor the houses we build, our chapter contributes $25,000 to the construction of each house. The funds we contribute go towards buying property, licenses and fees, renovation materials, etc. A portion of our funding comes to us through the UMD Student Government Association, the Pepsi Enhancement Fund, the United Way, and the Nora Roberts Foundation. The rest we raise ourselves.
Donations
Give the gift of home ownership! UMD Habitat for Humanity would be nothing without the continued support of countless students, parents, and alumni. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity – all donations are tax-deductible, and every little bit helps. Your gift could help buy:
- $10 – Box of Nails
- $35 – Roof Shingles
- $50 – Low Flow Toilet
- $75 – Window
- $100 – Kitchen Sink
- $150 – Front Door
- $500 – Siding
- $1000 – Wallboard
- $2000 – Flooring
We take donations very seriously – they are used exclusively to fund the construction of homes. Since UMD Habitat is a student organization, other costs are covered by our SGA. Because Habitat homeowners are required to pay back the cost of their homes through a no-interest loan, donations are a long-term investment – the same money is used over and over again to fund the construction of many Habitat homes.
The choice to contribute is yours. If you’re interested in donating, click here.
Run for Shelter 5K
The Run for Shelter 5K is a race/walk sponsored by UMD Habitat for Humanity and held once every spring and fall. The course starts on campus and travels around 38-acre Lake Artemesia just off campus. The event is now in its second year and is rapidly growing.
The fastest male and female runners receive prizes, but many of the people who participate aren’t serious runners. They come to stay fit, enjoy a beautiful morning, or just to meet new people and have fun. There are no age restrictions to participate, and people are welcome to sign up for the race in groups. Proceeds from the race go to UMD Habitat and its mission of ending poverty housing.
T-Shirts
Show your support for Habitat!
Our chapter has T-shirts available for sale at every meeting. They cost $15, and the money from shirts goes directly towards funding the house.

Volunteering at Ravens Games
During the NFL football season, we from time to time travel up to M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore to volunteer to work security at Ravens football games. As a volunteer, you get to watch most of the game – in between plays you simply have to turn around and make sure no fights have broken out in the crowd. If anything goes wrong, you call someone else to take care of the situation for you.
New fundraising ideas are always welcome!
